How we compile the rankings

Few, chosen and ranked. These are the rules we follow, where the data comes from and what its limits are.

Nobody pays to be listed

No hotel, restaurant, course, winery, spa, marina or circuit pays to be in a ranking or to move up in it.

There are no prices or bookings either: this portal is information only.

Where each ranking comes from

Whenever one exists, we start from an independent, dated list, such as the Michelin Guide, the World's 50 Best Vineyards or Top100GolfCourses. That list is the starting point: the selection and the final order are an editorial decision.

In each ranking, the "How we rank" section says which criteria weigh most.

How we calculate "The best nearby"

Each entry shows a nearby hotel, restaurant or airport. They are calculated from the coordinates of each place: we pick the closest one in our rankings within 75 km, and airports up to 150 minutes away.

If a Michelin-starred restaurant or a hotel with a Michelin Key is much closer, or none of those in our rankings is within an hour, we show that one instead.

Times are car estimates based on the straight-line distance, not real routes. Some coordinates are those of the town rather than of the venue itself.

Limits and updates

Each ranking shows its update date. External lists change every year and we review them with each edition.

Some awards, such as the World Spa Awards, are decided partly by public vote. In the dealership directory, entries marked "To be verified" come from older sources.
